Rubbish!
For the meeting on the 24th September, Daz brought along Pat Wheeler from  ‎Waste Technology Manager at Catalyst Lend Lease who gave a talk on waste management, recycling and methods of waste disposal. Quite entertaining, with many questions asked, especially during the phase on incinerators. Not quite sure why that would be...
Robert gave an entertaining if a little confusing vote of thanks that lasted almost as long at the guest speakers!

It's August

It's August and the sunshine of July seemed to be fast disappearing when it came around to the Chairmans BBQ. The day dawned overcast and the rain was more like a day out in Bangladesh during the monsoon season than a back garden in Runcorn during the summer!
However, shelters were up and we kept the grass dry and the sun put in an appearance after 6pm just to try and warm things up a bit. Not the best attended event we have had, lots on holiday, but around 30 people enjoyed a fine night of barbecue and a plentiful supply of wine.

High Class Glass
Our third (wow!) meeting of the month at The Golf Club allowed us to host a speaker Joe Cowley, who came along to tell us about the history of the glass making industry in St Helens.
One or 2 of our members were taken back in time to to when they worked in or around the now demolished works where hot sand and other bits of technical stuff were drawn together to produce something you cant see!
A good speaker and convivial night enjoyed by all.
A Load of Bowls!
July saw a second outing (yes I know, more than 1 in a month and more to come!) with a challenge from our Ladies Tangent club, who threw down the gauntlet to recreate the battles of old.
This time it was the sedate game of bowls, held at The Norton Arms in Halton Village.
Despite my best efforts, the boys from 41 Club won the day. It's now up to us to find another challenge for a future date.
A very nice meal was had after the trauma of walking up and down the green several times on what was a very hot night. Enjoyed by all who attended.

A Grand Day Out
The sun glinted on a variety of train passes, shiny coins and the top of many heads as we set off from Runcorn East on a mystery tour organised by the Chairman.
40 Minutes later we were ensconced in a refreshment area on Stalybridge station at the start of a pub tour with a difference, it was by rail!
The fantastic Transpennine Pub trail is becoming popular at weekends following it's inclusion in the Oz Clarke and James May TV show, but we went on a Monday to find most of the pubs were quiet. Good for us, talk was aplenty and beer flowed from the laden kitty until the early evening when those looking forward to cocoa and bed returned, only to leave the Chairman and Ex Chairman to uphold the honour of Runcorn 41 Club, moving bravely towards Huddersfield before returning home once the lamplighter had been around to illuminate the gas lamps of the pennine cobbled streets.
One noteworthy pub on the trail (most are less than 100 yards from the train) was the one we went to for lunch, The Riverhead Brewery Tap & Dining Room served an excellent lunch and a very pleasant time was had by all
The journey went without a hitch, other than tickets and debit/ credit cards being lost by a senior member of the team and oh yes! The chair and ex chair being stranded in Manchester awaiting a coach transfer because they had cancelled the trains back to Warrington and Runcorn!

High Fliers of Forty One...

High Fliers of Forty One...
June, with its late nights brought a mottley crew of aged individuals to have a meal at the Leigh Arms followed by a tour of Vale Royal Falconry Centre.
Coupled with actually flying the birds and overseen by the capable white legs of Phil and Nannette (many thanks to them for the evening, only Phil had his legs out... that was enough!)
Really enjoyable night for those who attended, many of whom have not been this close to having a bird on their arm for some years!

All a Buzz

All a Buzz
Our May meeting was timed just right. Govt talking about pesticides and we had a speaker who came along to talk about Bees and their value to the countryside and our health.
Paul Quigley, who works at Norton Priory Museum is one of the most passionate speakers we have had. His depth and breadth of knowledge and his ability to make things interesting was fantastic. Very well received by all members.
We also had Paul Molley, Area Councillor on the National Committee who came along to tell us what National was doing and what they could do to help all clubs and RT's in the Country.

First meeting and A.G.M.

First meeting and A.G.M.
Well it went well? Decided Iain should be the new chair and that was that, in fact the decision was unanimous, mainly due to the fact that there was no-one else who wanted the job!
Congrats must go to Mike who put in a sterling job for 2 years and kept all the folks entertained as they should be. No-one dropped off, no-one (other than the usual suspects) drew breath to complain. Well Done Mike.
At the end of the evening, to celebrate Iain's appointment, he had prepared a short quiz on the year 1961, the year he was born. Enjoyed by all and winners were Ted and Duncan, obviously everyone's memory of the 60's were impaired because they were too young (laughs too loudly!!)
Welcome to the blog of Runcorn 41 Club. The club is for ex Round Tablers looking for an evening in the company of other ex Tablers about once a month.
We meet at Runcorn Golf Club , meetings are generally 7.30 for 8pm meal.
